This year, the Daytona nerds got all hot and bothered again when Rolex did some things with some stuff and introduced a new version of its iconic chronograph. This is the reaction anyone who pays attention to the industry, or at least Rolex, has come to expect. Rolex takes arguably its most important watch, makes a change that the layperson couldn’t detect, and the fanboys go absolutely nuts. Cue the frothing, obsessive analysis of every detail. This year, Rolex released a Daytona with differences normal people could probably figure out (though I doubt they’d care). The new (off-catalog) best fake Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 126502 watches has a new enamel dial, an open caseback, and platinum components that drive the price way up.
It’s important to note up front that by making this off-catalog, AAA replica Rolex watches is signaling that none of these “changes” are actual changes. Aside from the display caseback, we likely won’t see an enamel dial on any standard production model (none of which seem to have been discontinued). If you were expecting a serious update to the core Daytona, I don’t think we’ll ever see a major, all-at-once redesign. It’s too important to the brand and too iconic in the minds of enthusiasts for such a dramatic change. That’s why Rolex’s approach works so well. It’s the same approach the brand applies to nearly every watch: small, incremental changes over time, as seen in the last proper update in 2023.
So what’s so special about the Rolex Daytona 126502? Objectively, nothing. But seen through the lens of a Rolex Daytona groupie, the 126502 contains a number of things to gawk at and should be sufficient to occupy conversation for months in the well-lit, beautifully appointed alleyways where such people congregate. The first piece of bait, and the reason, together with the dial, the watch costs nearly $60,000 is the case. It’s now executed in Rolesium, a feature previously restricted to Yacht-Masters. Don’t be misled: Rolesium is not one thing. It’s two things — steel and platinum — used together. Not fused together, and not made into a new alloy. Just used together. Here, Swiss Rolex copy watches has used platinum for the thin band around the bezel and for the caseback ring. That’s it.
The rest of the case is the same 40mm 904L stainless steel you’d find in any run-of-the-mill Daytona. The watch still has 100m water resistance (because Oyster case), its signature screw-down pushers (because historicity), and a sapphire crystal. The Oyster bracelet remains unchanged with a brushed and polished finish and a folding Oysterlock clasp with the brand’s 5mm Easylink fine adjustment system. The watch is still an incredible wear on the wrist. While I don’t love the Daytona as much as others, I would never deny the fact that it’s one of the best-wearing automatic chronographs on the market. The platinum adds slight weight, but it’s not nearly as hefty in hand or on wrist as the full-platinum Daytonas. The bigger point to be made is why? Is it because the feeling of a platinum caseback ring against the skin is tantamount to being touched by the gods, or is it simply for the sake of it?
Surrounding the dial is the same form of the bezel we saw updated for the perfect clone Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 126502LN watches, with a slim ring around the ceramic bezel insert. What is new is the bezel insert itself. Instead of the standard zirconia-based Cerachrom bezel, this model features a bezel formed of a new ceramic composite made of zirconia and tungsten carbide. The insert is purportedly more scratch-resistant, but more notably has an anthracite color that’s lighter than the standard black Cerachrom Daytona bezel and conveys a slight metallic luster. It’s admittedly hard to see in photos, but I promise you can see it in person, and I promise it looks great. There have also been small updates made to the engraved markings on the bezel, including the fact that the engravings are filled with platinum via PVD. The font has been tweaked, and the numbers no longer invert at the bottom. Instead, everything is aligned vertically, which in theory should improve readability, but given that no one actually uses a chronograph, and especially the Daytona is more of a status symbol than it is a tool watch, this admittedly welcome change is close to meaningless.
What people are absolutely gaga about is the white enamel dial, and I’m going to tell you that while Rolex and other outlets may be happy to tell you this is grand feu enamel, it is not. Grand feu enamel involves firing powdered glass upon a metal base at extremely high temperatures (800° C or higher) to force the materials to fuse. The process requires multiple firings, enameling the back to control the flexing of the metal and prevent cracking, and still has a failure rate of 40-50%. That’s why the more than 300-year-old technique is still so prized, in watches and beyond. While it’s prized, it’s become more and more common and is no longer confined to the upper echelons of watchmaking. Yes, you can find grand feu enamel in Pateks and Breguets, but you can also find it from anOrdain, Atelier Wen, Selten, and others. But despite what we reported in our press coverage, the best replica Rolex Daytona 126502 watches does not have a grand feu enamel dial.
The 126502 dial is enamel, and it is beautiful, and it is impressive. Instead of actual grand feu enamel, 1:1 duplicate Rolex watches has achieved its white enamel by fusing powdered glass to four ceramic bases (the main dial and each of the three registers), which are then — after firing — fixed to a brass plate. The glass is not fused to metal, as grand feu dictates, but instead placed upon a metal base after being fused to ceramic. Fusing powdered glass to ceramic is called a glaze, not grand feu enamel, and while it provides a very similar effect, it is easier (because the ceramic is less susceptible to heat) and less impressive (because it requires less work and has a lower failure rate).
I don’t know why Rolex would choose to use a term that doesn’t accurately describe what it’s done, though there are low-hanging cynical theories I could toss out (ScrewDownCrown has a great article on this exact issue, where he shares his own thoughts.). But terminology aside, the dial is lovely. It conveys that milky, shiny white that you’d expect from an enamel dial, and has those great subtle edge curves and sunken subs that I love from enamel dials (for a more pronounced version of this, check out the edges around the hand holes in the Seiko Presage SPB045). Beyond the white enamel glaze dial, the layout and everything else remain unchanged. You still get your red “DAYTONA” text, your paragraph under the Rolex crown, and your thirty-minute and twelve-hour totalizers, plus the running seconds at 6.
The Rolex Daytona 126502 is only the third Daytona to feature an open caseback, after the production platinum model and the Le Mans editions (You can also get a sapphire caseback on the Land-Dweller and the 1908). The UK best fake watches contains the same Rolex caliber 4131 as other modern Daytonas. That means all the fun Rolex names for all the parts every watch has: Chronergy escapement, Parachrom hairspring, and Paraflex shock absorbers. The 4131 is probably the gold standard for automatic chronographs, and on display here, you get to see all the inner workings, with a yellow gold skeletonized rotor and some selective decoration on the plates. My favorite part? The red “DAYTONA” text is positioned to almost perfectly mirror the same text on the dial.
My unrestrained contempt aside, the high quality copy Rolex Daytona watches — including this one — is a fantastic watch. It’s historic, iconic, and has no real failings from a practical perspective, except perhaps the inconvenience of the screwdown pushers. This edition shows us potential updates we may see in future models, including the bezel color and font, and the display caseback. I doubt we’ll see the grand feu enamel glaze dial on any regular production models, but it will serve its purpose of making this an exciting limited release for those who get excited about such things.
I often don’t bring price up, but in this case, I hope people talk about it: Even with the five-piece enamel dial construction and the platinum elements, it’s hard to reconcile the $49,000 gap between the standard white dial steel Daytona and this. Platinum isn’t that rare or valuable, and even though proper grand feu can be done affordably, Rolex took the easy route by using enamel glaze. But I know it won’t matter. While this hasn’t generated the slobberfest some Daytonas have, it’s still receiving almost universal praise with scant criticism. But the reality is, it’s just another admittedly wonderful Daytona, and one you almost certainly won’t be able to get. Of course, that’s the true wizardry of Rolex: getting you excited about small differences in a watch you’ll never get to own.
